Daikin Altherma - smaller foot-print than solar!

Montague Place is a dynamic collection of studio/1 bed and 2 bed apartments in Kingston Upon Thames, with underground parking.

The developers of Montague Place, equipped each apartment with solar panels in an attempt to meet the 10% Merton Rule. However, due to the number of apartments, 55 in total, the foot-print area on the roof was too small for the quantity of panels required to satisfy the Merton Rule.

In order to achieve the 10% renewable technology requirement, the Local Authority and their Energy Assessor advised the developers to provide some of the apartments with air to water heat pumps.

The developers specified Space Air to supply the Daikin Altherma inverter split type heat pump systems for 8 of the 55 apartments in order to exceed the 10% Merton Rule.

The heat pump systems are used for central heating to convector radiators and towel rails as well as the domestic hot water serving the top floor luxury apartments. All the indoor units and storage cylinders have been placed in the airing cupboards, leaving enough space to install washing machines and shelving. The outdoor units have been positioned on the roof with easy access for the annual maintenance check. (The inter-connecting refrigerant pipe work between the indoor and outdoor units can be up to 30m).

The Daikin Altherma split system is very versatile. Each system in Montague Place is arranged differently due to the interior design but all components are the same. Many parts of the assembly were pre-fabricated by Space Air at their HQ in Guildford. This ensured accurate installation and reduced site time. The Space Air design also simplifies input by plumbers and electricians.

Mark Houghton, Director of Space Air Solutions commented “This was a challenging project, in that the developer had precise requirements regarding the installation of the outdoor units. Space Air designed and manufactured weatherproof cowls for the project which meant that he developers wishes were met exactly”.

The systems have been commissioned by Space Air, who are fully MCS approved.
