Leading provider of safety at height solutions, COMBISAFE, has supplied an innovative edge protection solution at the £160 million Eagle House development in London – the UK’s first project to combine the COMBISAFE POWER POST with vertical netting.
Designed by international architects Farrells, work on the original Eagle House development stalled for two years to leave an unfinished 27-storey concrete frame. After acquiring the building in 2012, developer Mount Anvil and AREA Property Partners have restarted construction and will transform it into a mixed use development comprising 276 new homes and 6,312m2 of commercial space.
To ensure the highest standards of safety during the two year construction programme, Mount Anvil turned to the practical experience and product expertise of COMBISAFE. With the crucial requirement to retain all loose materials within the structure, a fast installation and easy access to the cladding brackets, COMBISAFE supplied 252 POWER POSTS and 234 vertical nets which were delivered in blue to match Mount Anvil’s branding.
“Mount Anvil always looks to be at the forefront of Health & Safety,” said Brett Fennell, Senior Site Manager at Mount Anvil. “COMBISAFE are known for their variety of products and after some investigation, we found their containment system. It is versatile, easy to use and has no work at height requirements and most importantly is safe.”
After supplying engineering drawings to COMBISAFE, the safety at height specialists were able to return a temporary works layout drawing and a bill of materials, which allowed Mount Anvil to know exactly how much material was required and where it needed to be positioned onsite.
COMBISAFE trained the Mount Anvil team on how to install and inspect the system correctly to ensure optimum safety levels were maintained. With the system’s fast installation a key benefit, Mount Anvil installed 20 linear metres in just 15 minutes – saving man hours on site. As the floor to soffit containment is installed from slab level the system completely removed the need for working at height.
Setting new standards in floor to soffit edge protection for steel and concrete construction, the POWER POST has been specially developed to meet the unique challenges of virtually all construction projects.
Suitable for heights between 2.7 and 4.2 metres, it incorporates a unique compression unit to apply a force of up to 7.0kN between the floor and soffit and ensures compliance with EN 13374: The European standard for temporary edge protection systems. The compression unit can be simply and efficiently adjusted, without any need to dismantle full height barriers, so safety is never compromised.
Set for completion in the summer of 2015, Eagle House will breathe new life into the Old Street area of London. The combination of early design consultation and successful delivery of preventative and protective systems will help to deliver a safe working environment throughout the duration of the Eagle House project.
