The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) is the lead qualifying body for Architectural Technology and represents those practising and studying within the discipline.
CIAT qualifies Chartered Architectural Technologists, MCIAT, and professionally qualified Architectural Technicians, TCIAT.
The Institute bestows a number of Awards and scholarships to both its membership and to fellow professionals within the built environment sector; whether they be presented for recognition, technical excellence or as a mechanism of support.
Nominations for these awards are now open and include the Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology, the premier built environment accolade which recognises outstanding achievement in the practice of Architectural Technology.
Submissions are invited for projects (whole, or part of) that have been completed within the last five years. Submission should include illustrations, images and written secifications or other report documentation for the project and be presented in the format of two A2 boards and two A1 detailed design drawings (maximum).
In addition, submissions must also include a summary of the entry (approximately 1000 words) with the following headings, clearly indicating how the project achieved Architectural Technology excellence in terms of: functionality; buildability; performance; innovation; and sustainability. Closing date for the submission of applications is 27 June 2014.
The outright winner of the Open Award for Technical Excellence in Architectural Technology in 2013 was LSI Architects LLP’s Louise Hamilton Centre. The new build palliative care centre is in the grounds of the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston, Norfolk.
The Alan King Award, named after the Institute's first President, recognises projects valued £750k or under and have demonstrated outstanding excellence in the practice of Architectural Technology.
The Institute also has several Awards for its student members: Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology (Project); Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology (Report); Outstanding Student Award; and the John Newey Education Foundation.
CIAT's Gold Award exists to recognise and celebrate the effort and commitment of Chartered Members who have demonstrated an outstanding service to Architectural Technology, be it the profession or the Institute. It is presented in the form of a certificate, lapel badge and medal.
There are a maximum of ten Awards each year and as it is the principal honour that the Institute can bestow upon its Chartered Members, it should be reserved for people: who have changed, developed and advanced the Institute, particularly by solid, demonstrable and outstanding achievement; or whose work has brought outstanding distinction to Architectural Technology or enhanced the discipline’s reputation.
Further details of all the awards and the nomination process is available on CIAT's website.
