VELUX’s CarbonLight Homes in Rothwell, Kettering, is the only British project to be shortlisted in the Living category at the prestigious 2012 European Commission’s Sustainable Energy Europe (SEE) Awards.The Living category celebrates schemes that promote sustainability in the built environment. The CarbonLight Homes have been nominated as part of the Model Home 2020 project, which involves the post-occupancy monitoring of six buildings in five European countries designed to be carbon neutral and promote the health and wellbeing of occupants.Other projects shortlisted in the Living category include buildings such as The National Theatre in Prague and Kilbarrack fire station in Dublin as well as municipal planning systems such as Sant Cugat in Spain and Brussels-Capital Region inBelgium. There were a total of 262 entries across five awards categories which also include Communicating, Consuming, Learning and Travelling.The winners will be announced on Tuesday 19th June in Brussels during Sustainable Energy Week.Keith Riddle, Manager Director of VELUX, comments:“VELUX’s Model Home 2020 project has set out to develop a formula for energy efficient homes that are comfortable and attractive places to live that can not only be applied in the UK but also across Europe. The six buildings respond to the different architectural, economic and climactic needs of their country of origin but the monitoring phase of each scheme will help to inform the universal drive towards a sustainable future.”The SEE shortlist announcement follows the UK manufacturing arm of VELUX, Fife Joinery Manufacturing Ltd, being highly commended in the Carbon Trust’s Energy Efficiency in Manufacturing Awards 2012.
