Bell & Webster Concrete are part of the Olympic elite

Bell & Webster Concrete, an ElecoPrecast company, was chosen by Balfour Beatty as preferred subcontractor and supplier of the precast terracing units to the London 2012 Olympic Aquatics Centre.

The economical and versatile off-site solution was chosen to meet varying viewing standards, imposed loading and seating arrangements.

The Zaha Hadid designed Olympic Aquatics Centre showcases the precast manufacturing skills by the industry elite; exposing the concrete finish rather than painting or cladding.

The Bell & Webster Concrete terracing units were manufactured in Grantham, Lincolnshire then delivered and positioned on-site to accelerate the speed of construction. From the initial enquiry to the last unit being delivered to site took a total of 16 weeks.

The project specification required total commitment to the Olympic Delivery Authority’s eco-friendly principles; Bell & Webster Concrete was able to demonstrate this through its British Standard BS EN ISO 14001 and BS EN ISO 9001 accreditations. Bell & Webster Concrete met the criteria to deliver a solution which ensured sustainability, quality and efficiency through the use of reclaimed recycled aggregates, used cement replacements and cast air diffusers in to the units to provide an air supply into the seating areas from below the structure.

The 2500 seat stadium will be converted to a public swimming pool set to open in spring 2014.

John Stothard, Managing Director of ElecoPrecast, reflects: “At Bell & Webster, we believe in working with the customer as a partner from the start, meaning we offer our expertise in designing and manufacturing terracing to suit every individual project and are proud to be associated within the London 2012 Olympics construction. The Aquatics Centre boasts facilities now that London previously could not offer.”
