Accoya, the world-leading modified wood product manufactured by Accsys Technologies, has been selected for the conversion of an old saw mill to a multi-purpose venue at Montalto Estate in County Down, Ireland.
The 18th century Montalto Estate, successively owned by the Rowden and Ker families as well as the fifth Earl of Clanwilliam, has been renovated in recent years by the current owners, the Wilson family, to provide a luxurious and relaxing venue steeped in history for guests to enjoy.
In keeping with the Grade B listed old mill’s character, Accoya wood was supplied by Abbey Woods, Accoya’s official distributor in Ireland and was specified for the construction of the external barn doors and internal window sub-frames.
Manufactured using Accsys Technologies’ proprietary process, Accoya is one of the most advanced modified wood products on the market delivering outstanding levels of performance, stability and class 1 durability. Exceeding the high-quality and aesthetic attributes of tropical hardwoods, it also boasts excellent environmental credentials by using wood sourced from FSC certified and sustainable forests as well as being Cradle to Cradle Gold certified.
Colin McCabe of John J O’Connell Architects Ltd., architect for the project, said: “In any conversion, it is important that features and characters of the original building are maintained and respected. Accoya is the perfect construction material for the conversion of the saw mill at Montalto Estate, boasting its superiority as a timber product, not least its durability, stability and sustainability."
Bryan Crennell, sales and marketing director for Accsys Technologies, said: “Accoya is proven as a sustainable, durable, and stable material which is guaranteed against rot and decay for 50 years for exterior use, making it perfect for external building applications such as this.
"The use of Accoya in this conversion project perfectly illustrates the venue’s rich history as a timber saw mill and meets the demands of architectural excellence. The classification of Accoya window frames as carbon negative over their full life cycle proves Montalto Estate’s attention to environmental considerations.”
