Clugston Construction, part of the privately owned Clugston Group, has secured a £66m contract to deliver the building and civil engineering works for a new Combined Heat & Power facility for Wheelabrator Technologies at Kemsley in Kent.
Wheelabrator Technologies is an industry leader in the conversion of everyday residential and business waste into clean energy. Wheelabrator has a platform of 20 power-producing assets across the US and UK —16 energy-from-waste facilities and four independent power plants.
The Kemsley project will see the construction of a combined heat and power plant which will create 40 new, full-time permanent roles when the facility becomes operational in 2019.
Civils work will commence in August, delivered and managed by Clugston Construction alongside its process engineering partner, Constructions Industrielles de la Méditerranée (CNIM).
Steve Radcliffe, managing director of Clugston Construction, said: “The project for Wheelabrator Technologies is the latest in our growing portfolio of energy-from-waste plants, and is certainly one of the largest combined heat and power developments we have been involved in. We are delighted to have been chosen by Wheelabrator to deliver such an important facility and we look forward to working with the company over the next three years and beyond.”
Once constructed, the Wheelabrator Kemsley facility will manage up to 550,000 tonnes of waste per year from Kent and South East England. As a result, the site will generate 43 MW of sustainable electricity to the National Grid and provide 70 tonnes of valuable steam heat to the adjacent Kemsley Paper Mill.
