The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has used British Gypsum’s innovative Thistle Magnetic Plaster in a recent refurbishment of the President’s office at its prestigious Grade II* listed London headquarters.
The building, which is also the National Architecture Centre, accommodates the RIBA architectural library and an archive of special collections with more than 4 million items.
The President of the RIBA, Jane Duncan, wanted to use her office space to display design development sketches and models created by students to showcase the future of architecture.
As this vision calls for frequent changes to exhibits, a flexible solution was required, without the use of pins or adhesive substances, to eliminate damage and the need for regular redecoration of the room.
Head of Projects and Building Strategy and in-house Architect at the RIBA, Martin Pascoe, choose to specify British Gypsum’s Thistle Magnetic Plaster on the display wall to meet these specific flexibility requirements, enhance the experience of the room and ensure the space remains aesthetically appealing.
Thistle Magnetic Plaster provides a smooth, high quality surface that attracts magnets and can be used to create a highly interactive space, making it ideal for creative environments.
Jane Duncan explained: “The magnetic plaster provides us with an easily adaptable display space to illustrate students’ best work in an eye-catching way.”
Martin Pascoe added: “Operating a 21st century organisation within a listed building requires us to be respectful while also remaining relevant, which often means we have to find innovative ways to satisfy functional needs without affecting the fabric or the aesthetic.
“We’re very pleased with the outcome and the magnetic plaster is working exactly as desired, allowing us to transform the space from a stately office to a collaborative space, and back again, with zero upkeep.”
The RIBA building also has several galleries that host top architecture exhibitions, including International competitions, the Royal Gold Medal, the RIBA Stirling Prize and the RIBA Presidents Medals, which is awarded to the best student’s projects.
