Balfour Beatty has joined a Scottish-wide industry effort to boost recognition of the role the construction industry plays in stimulating the economy.
Creating Scotland’s Future is a campaign by the Scottish Contractors Group (SCG) to highlight the capabilities of the Scottish construction industry and the value of construction investment in creating jobs and growth.
The event, held at Edinburgh’s Our Dynamic Earth, was addressed by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP.
Balfour Beatty is working for customers across Scotland to deliver vital infrastructure schemes such as search and rescue helicopter bases at Inverness and Prestwick airports, Grampian Custodial Unit, the refurbishment of Kessock Bridge, Gushetfaulds Bus Depot and Earlseat Wind Farm. Balfour Beatty is also constructing new postgraduate student accommodation for the University of Edinburgh. A presentation about this project was showcased at the launch event by Alastair Moore, Balfour Beatty Senior Project Manager.
Research from the SCG has found that investment in construction is one of the most effective ways to stimulate the economy, generating local jobs and kick-starting growth. £2.84 of wider economic activity is generated for every £1 spent on construction. The industry is heavily labour intensive with opportunities for people from all educational backgrounds. At a time when the unemployment rate for 16-24 year olds in Scotland is 20%, this kind of investment is crucial.
The Scottish Government is already providing welcome support for the industry, by prioritising capital investment and establishing the Infrastructure Investment Plan. However, the Creating Scotland’s Future campaign will bring together industry, clients and decision makers to discuss how more can be done to increase investment and maximise the benefits projects bring to local communities.
Murray Easton, Balfour Beatty Regional Managing Director, said: “We have a strong Scottish heritage and we continue to play our part in the creation of growth and jobs for Scotland. Balfour Beatty is committed to supporting local communities through our supply chain and the generation of employment opportunities and apprenticeships.
“We know what the Scottish construction industry can offer in terms of the benefits it provides to the Scottish economy. For every pound invested in construction in Scotland, 93 pence stays in Scotland, supporting local economies.”
