Balfour Beatty’s Power Systems business has been awarded a contract to design, upgrade and install over 40km of cables for London Underground.
The project includes the installation of 11kV and 22kV electricity cables, as well as fibre optic pilot cables and the decommissioning of old high voltage cables.
The work will improve resilience across London Underground’s power supply infrastructure and includes work to renew cabling and connect several substations to key power supply points.
Balfour Beatty was selected for three out of the four work lots awarded under the Power Cabling Framework in spring last year valued at a total of £250m.
One of the reasons for awarding the framework to Balfour Beatty was its commitment to employing young people and the company has so far recruited four trainees and two apprentices to the project.
William Naismith, Balfour Beatty Power Systems Director, said: “This award demonstrates our ability to improve and maintain London Underground’s infrastructure. We have a long and established relationship with our customer and we look forward to delivering this project, from design through to installation, testing and maintenance.”
Work commences in January 2015 and will be complete in early 2017.
