Problem
Transforming a 3,266 m² 1980s office building into a modern educational facility posed a significant challenge. The brief was twofold: deliver a robust structural solution capable of supporting high-performance teaching spaces, and do so in a way that aligned with Westminster Under School’s commitment to sustainability. Retaining and re-using the existing steel frame was central to reducing embodied carbon and construction waste. To achieve this, the project required a decking system that could integrate seamlessly with the retained structure, maintain strict safety and performance standards, and support a demanding construction programme.
Solution
RMD Profiles was engaged to design, supply, and install TR80+ composite metal decking from Firth Steels. At 80 mm deep, TR80+ provides excellent spanning capacity and structural efficiency, making it particularly well suited to multi-storey educational buildings. Its profiled design ensures high composite action with concrete, while offering the flexibility needed for integration into complex refurbishment schemes.
Before installation, RMD carried out site welding trials to ensure that stud welding through the existing painted steel beams could be achieved without compromising bond strength. All weld areas were prepared and checked, ensuring a flawless connection between studs and decking.
Edge trims, and shear stud positioning were designed in full accordance with BCSA and project specifications. Matt Cunliffe sat in several design meetings to help bring the slab into the desired weight required for the existing reinforced frame.
Strict safety measures, including exclusion zones, PPE compliance, and secure access provision, were observed throughout. With sequencing planned alongside the main contractor, MYCO Construction, the decking installation was delivered efficiently in phased sections, enabling concrete pours to progress without delay.
Result
The use of TR80+ decking not only provided a robust working platform and a structurally efficient composite floor but also delivered clear sustainability benefits. By re-using the existing steel frame and integrating a high-performance decking system, the project avoided unnecessary steel replacement and achieved significant reductions in embodied carbon and weight.
With concrete works completed early in 2025, the fit-out phase began on schedule. The resulting structure now underpins new light-filled classrooms, specialist facilities, and communal spaces, demonstrating how technical precision and sustainable design can go hand in hand.
Matt Cunliffe says ‘working with a superb site team like the guys at MYCO really made the project run smoothly, the innovative ideas and team work ethic & enthusiasm is a refreshing experience to work with, and proves that collaboration is key to a successful project. Worzel Gummage should win team player of the year along with a close runner up Mr Hammond, there energy and support to their site team were an absolute asset to MYCO.
