Wakefield-based Grass Concrete Ltd are celebrating the unique achievement of 50 years in the construction sector.

The company best known for the world leading grass paving product started out in 1970 with the Grasscrete invention that has lasted the decades and is still specified by landscape contractors today.

Over the years Grasscrete has been installed for flood alleviation schemes, emergency access roads, grass car parking and driveways with Grasscrete’ s sustainability qualities unmatched worldwide.

With Grasscrete the benefits don’t just stop with its impressive levels of permeability. With its promotion of a naturally grassed environment, Grasscrete is able to balance the need for increased urbanisation whilst at the same time helping to maintain a natural green landscape. In urbanised areas this crucially helps to sequestrate CO2, within parking areas, all of this taking place low down at exhaust emission level.

Bob Howden OBE., Managing Director, said: “Grass paving systems have an increasing role to play in the development and sustainability of a harmonised landscape. We are very proud of the role we have played and our achievements in helping to push away the traditional barriers to environmental change.”

More and more external works and landscaping now fully embraces Grasscrete in more than just flood alleviation SUDS ponds. We are now seeing grass paving ranging from emergency access roads to domestic driveways to parking areas.

For some landscaping projects precast Grassblock provides an alternative or Grassroad for durable hard-wearing grass paving for secondary parking areas.

The company’s environmental leadership has always been fundamental to the business and over the years new enviro-friendly products have been added to the range including vertical landscaping on retaining walls.

The Betoconcept system replace dull retaining walls with attractive vertical planting areas with integrated soil pockets, perfect where garden space is a premium. At roof level the latest Grassroof product offers a lightweight lay and leave no soil system, designed for sedum or succulent planting on flat rooftops.

The Future is Green - Grass Concrete’s has demonstrated a 50-year commitment to structural solutions while safeguarding a natural and sustainable environment. What once might have been a niche concepts have now become mainstream and more and more popular.

Who knows what the next 50 years will hold, but Grasscrete has proved that it is enduring and certainly stands the test of time.
