The “European Sustainable School“ award is just one significant feature of the 40 year old Geschwister Scholl School in Bensheim (Federal state of Hesse). Founded in the south of the town in 1972, it bears the name of brother and sister, Hans and Sophie Scholl, who were members of the White Rose, a student group in Munich that was active in the non-violent resistance movement in Nazi Germany, especially in distributing flyers against the war and the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler. In post-war Germany, Hans and Sophie Scholl are recognized as symbols of the humanist German resistance movement against the totalitarian Nazi regime. Nowadays, about 1,850 pupils from 54 nations are taught by approximately 200 teachers and freelance staff at the Geschwister Scholl School (GSS) in the district called Bergstraße.
In awarding the title “Sustainable School” by the Deutsche Gesellschaft for environmental education, it was confirmed that the GSS makes its pupils aware of environmental issues in an exemplary fashion and makes every effort to teach them the resource-friendly treatment of our environment (e.g. by saving energy). Not only did comprehensive modernisation measures of the school complex contribute to increasing the number of class and specialised rooms, but energy-saving renovation programs also coincided with the construction works.
During the annex works and the rebuilding of the Geschwister Scholl School (refectory, library, specialised rooms for natural sciences, technology and music) Fieger Louvre Windows were installed in the façade.

The louvre windows were selected to match the requirements of the
various rooms, as closely as possible. Because of this particular
application and the overall size of the vents, each unit was fitted with
motors featuring an anti-trapping function. Some units also had motors
operating in tandem and magnetic contacts enabling an alarm in the event
of unauthorized opening. The full height vents were also supplied
complete with integral stainless steel crossbars for additional
security.
For the school Sports Hall, the designers took into account the need for
impact-resistant glazing; this involved using 8mm laminated glass on
the inside face, with a 0.76mm PVB interlayer. To provide the
dual-purpose smoke venting function, our CE marked SmoTec models were
installed; all of which are tested and certified in accordance with EN
12101-2.
