Isover launches advanced airtightness solution

Saint-Gobain Isover has introduced a new airtightness and moisture management system, the most advanced solution of its kind, to help specifiers exceed UK Building Regulations and improve thermal performance and EPC ratings.

By preventing unintended air exchanges through the building fabric, Vario XtraSafe can allow buildings to far exceed 10m³/(m².hr)@50Pa – the minimum standard for airtightness in new residences according to Part L 1A of the Building Regulations.

Its advanced design also allows users to achieve PassivHaus airtightness standards of less than 1m³/(m².hr)@50Pa, significantly improving the building users’ comfort and warmth.

Alongside airtightness, Vario XtraSafe offers high levels of moisture control, with a vapour permeability of between 1.2 and 70g/m2/day thanks to a highly variable Sd value (0.3m – 25m) and a smart membrane that adapts to external conditions. Pores in the membrane stay closed in winter to prevent moisture entering a building and open up in summer to allow moisture to flow out of the wall. The design allows substrates to dry out, extending the life of the building fabric by reducing the risk of mould or rot.

William Mott, technical product manager at Saint-Gobain Isover, explained: “Increasingly specifiers are looking to futureproof their buildings in terms of both lifespan and energy and environmental performance, and so often want to exceed minimum requirements for airtightness.

“But while superb airtightness reduces heat loss and energy usage, the lack of air movement can increase moisture levels and, in turn, cause significant damage to a building and even pose health risks. By using a solution such as Vario®, specifiers can achieve the desired airtightness while protecting the building and its occupants.”

Vario XtraSafe allows for one-person installation thanks to a unique hook and loop system, pre-printed cutting guides and specialist tapes. Together, these features allow installers to form an airtight seal around all joints and detailing quickly and easily. Vario XtraSafe has also been storm tested to over 90mph.
