New housing development benefits from cutting edge drainage technology

Asset International ltd (Asset) was commissioned by contractors KW Bell to install a dual purpose Weholite stormwater drainage system at a Redrow housing development in south Wales.

KW Bell used 5m deep, 3.5m diameter Weholite manholes as well 180m of 2.1 m and 1.8 m diameter interconnecting pipework.

A Weholite control chamber, positioned at the end of the drainage system restricts the flow of excess water caused by heavy rainfall before releasing it gradually via an outfall back into the ground. A pumping chamber will also pump water from lower levels back into the outfall for release.

Weholite’s light weight design reduced the need for heavy lifting equipment on site, crucial as the team were working within a tight space.

Site manager with KW Bell, said: “This is the first time we had used the Weholite product and we found it excellent to work with.

“Space on site was at a premium, so being able to nest and stack the pipes for storage is a real benefit to us. Its longer lengths and prefabricated units meant we worked at a quicker rate. This alongside the simple installation saved us valuable time and money.”

Weholite’s versatility allows bespoke designs for a variety of schemes of all sizes such as flood alleviation, marine outfall and ventilation projects.

Technical sales engineer at Asset, Gareth Green, said: “This project has been another great opportunity to use our expertise of working within the housing sector to design and manufacture a bespoke system specifically suited to this particular site.

“While KW Bell was able to benefit immediately from the ease of installation, the longevity of Weholite will ensure it carries on doing its job for the generations of people living at the new development.”
