Civic Trust award for Number One Riverside

FaulknerBrowns has been awarded a Civic Trust Commendation for Number One Riverside, the new civic offices for Rochdale Borough Council.

The Commendation was presented at an awards ceremony at Blackpool Winter Gardens, hosted by architect, writer and TV presenter George Clarke, a former employee of FaulknerBrowns Architects.

From 238 applications, 79 national and international projects were rewarded with a Civic Trust Award, Commendation or Community Recognition.

Awards are given to projects which demonstrate high quality architecture and design, and are sustainable as well as being accessible to all users.  The awards also highlight buildings which have made a positive cultural, social or economic contribution to the community.

The judges praised Number One Riverside for making a significant contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment and providing a positive social, cultural, environmental and economic benefit to the local community.

It is another accolade for the building, which was named best mixed-use development by the Concrete Society last year, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce’s Building of the Year in 2013 and Mixology Interior Design Awards – Public Sector Project of the Year 2013.

Councillor Peter Williams, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Customer Services at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “We’re really proud of this award because, as a communal building, Number One Riverside really belongs to our residents. It is a critical part of the regeneration of Rochdale town centre and will benefit many generations to come.”

Steve McIntyre, Partner at FaulknerBrowns Architects, who designed the building, said: “We were delighted to win the Civic Trust Commendation which acknowledges the quality of the architecture and civic presence of Number One Riverside.”

The Civic Trust Awards scheme was established in 1959 to recognise the very best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art from around the world.
