BIID members shortlisted for Sunday Times Homes Awards

The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) is proud to announce that three of its members have been shortlisted for the prestigious Sunday Times British Homes Awards. April Russell Designs, Staffan Tollgard Design Group and Gregory Phillips Architects have all reached the final for the scheme’s ‘Interior Design’ category, with the winner to be revealed at a Gala awards dinner on Wednesday 19 September, at the London Marriott in Grosvenor Square.

April Russell Designs entered their project for a stunning Grade 11 listed mansion house in Belgravia. The remarkable property, has been renovated and redecorated to combine architecture and interior design, resulting in a fusion of traditional regency and modern elements. By stripping back the house to what it should be, raw and unique, with illuminating textural finishes and lighting to enhance the owner’s artwork, the end result exceeded the client’s brief. Featuring furniture from post-war Italy, as well as custom designed pieces the project was the epitome of April Russell’s, “less is more”, philosophy.

Staffan Tollgard Design Group’s beautiful Kingston Mansion project is a newly-built contemporary Arts and Crafts home on the outskirts of London. With apparently conflicting client requirements of a boutique interior combined with a fun family home, the company’s challenge was to reconcile these elements into a coherent design. Thanks to the consistent use of materials in the interior architecture and joinery, along with the use of an Arts and Crafts inspired motif throughout, Staffan Tollgard has created a unified interior which has thrilled the client.

Gregory Phillips Architects is short-listed for its stunning work on a contemporary home in Berkshire. “The idea was to create a holistic response to the client brief that included all aspects of the interior, exterior and landscape design,” explains Gregory Phillips. “This is a building where the interior design is part of the architecture, and the external landscaping is an extension of the interior design. Too often with modern houses, the interiors are stark, lacking luxury and warmth. We wanted to create a contemporary luxurious house built with a combination of modern design and traditional materials. The outline of the clients brief was to create a spectacular, glamorous family home, to include the latest technology and provide an extremely high level of finishes and fittings. This resulted in a 6 bedroom house with a number of reception / entertaining spaces. There is also an internal reception space at first floor level, opening onto a dramatic external terrace with extensive panoramic views and every space has spectacular views of the landscape whether immediate, intermediate or far reaching..”
