The demand for wood in interiors has seen a massive revival in recent years. Nowhere is this trend more evident than in the stairparts market where metal and glass balustrading is no longer the preferred choice, with people demanding a more homely touch to their staircases - a touch which only wood can provide.
White oak, hemlock, pine, sapele and American black walnut currently top the list when renovating a staircase. White oak provides timeless appeal whilst American Black Walnut, which is one of the most beautiful and desirable timbers, is being used for high-spec staircase design projects.
And when it comes to design, there has been a move towards more innovative and modern styles being combined with a traditional twist. Faceted, geometric shapes are becoming more prominent in spindle design, with sculptural and organic lines creating a simple yet stunning appearance and always understated.
The huge selection of woods coupled with inspiring, new designs on the market has led to a more adventurous approach and the big staircase trend this year is white primed stairparts mixed with rich oak handrails and newel posts, which when used together create a classy yet contemporary look.
In this way, staircase renovations can totally transform the overall appearance of a hallway or entrance, and if done in a thoughtful and creative way, the staircase can become a stunning focal point in the home.
“Interior trends tend to have more longevity than we’re used to in other industries, with key themes remaining prevalent for three to five years. So in 2013 we’re likely to see the continuation of similar styles that have grown in popularity this year,” said Clive Durose, who developed the new id range.
“We’re delighted that wood is enjoying a renaissance in the market again. With its unique qualities, it is sustainable and renewable, and combined with its natural beauty, durability and environmental appeal, it is not surprising that it is a top choice for use in interiors.
“The days of constant change in the home are behind us and consumers and designers alike are much more likely to be thinking long term when redesigning their home, seeking out products that offer durability, but also style, that will stand the test of time,” Durose concluded.
