PPG’s support gives local landmark a bright future

Global paint manufacturer PPG Architectural Coatings has recently given a local landmark to its Birstall site, Oakwell Hall, a much needed boost in the form of a significant cash donation.

The presentation at Oakwell Hall saw PPG’s general manager for UK and Ireland, Steve Pocock, hand over a cheque for just under £20,000 to heritage manager Eric Brown and Councillor Jean Calvert.

PPG, which manufactures leading paint brands Johnstone’s and Leyland, has a long standing commitment to charity, both on a local and national level. The donation to Oakwell Hall marks the second donation to be granted under PPG’s new initiative, the Global Charitable Contributions Program, which extends its direct grant-giving to charitable groups in the communities where it is based.

Through the programme, a local charity with a specific focus on education, human services, cultural and arts and civic or community affairs is chosen to benefit from the fund. Oakwell Hall, which is within walking distance of the Birstall site and often frequented by its staff, was the leading candidate.

Along with Oakwell Hall, the Red House museum in nearby Gomersal will also benefit from the donation as it is also run by Kirklees Council. Staff at the two properties, which were granted the maximum $30,000 (£19,315) available from the fund, will use the donation to create a full, varied programme of events at both museums throughout the year. In addition, the money will also help fund essential maintenance costs, including the long-awaited rebuilding of one of the chimneys, planned for later this year.

Steve Pocock said: “It’s fantastic that PPG has been able to support such an important historic local landmark and ensure it continues to be enjoyed for generations to come. I’m looking forward to hearing what exciting projects the team have lined up to make full use of the donation and I’m sure our staff will take great pride in knowing the part PPG has played in Oakwell Hall’s future.”

Staff from Oakwell Hall and the Red House museum have been invited to announce the areas set to benefit from the donation at a special open day to be held on Tuesday 18th June at PPG’s Birstall site, where PPG will launch its Local Community Programme, which will see the company support additional local community projects and initiatives.
