A new housing development project of 110 homes in Chilton Moor near Sunderland is nearing its completion using Marley's Edgemere interlocking slates and concrete plain tiles.
The project by Gentoo Homes, formerly known as Sunderland Housing Group, is built on a Brownfield site that previously contained traditional terraced houses. The new development contains a mix of modern bungalows, ranging from two to four bedrooms, and three-storey town houses, all designed around a centrepiece of green space area.
Paul Nagel, architectural technologist from Gentoo Homes, comments:
“We designed the housing to add something a little more contemporary and exciting into a very traditional ‘coalfield’ area. The appearance of the properties varies as we specified two different types of brick and had some of the properties rendered. By alternating two colours of the Marley Edgemere slate and plain tiles, this gives the houses character and ensures they don’t appear too uniform.
“We specified Marley tiles as we required a durable tile that would also work in conjunction with integrated solar panels and surface-mounted PV panels. We also wanted a brand with a reputation for quality products. We chose the Old English Dark Red and Smooth Grey colourways in the Edgemere slate and concrete plain tiles as the site is within an established residential area and these finishes complement the existing roofing within the Chilton Moor area.
“The feedback we’ve had on the roof so far has been excellent. The project has been under construction for a while now and the tiles we used on the first phase of the development still look great several years after installation.”
Charlotte Hughes, campaign manager at Marley comments:
“Our Edgemere interlocking slates enable designers to replicate a style that reflects the traditional building style of the local area. Using the Edgemere slates with our ever-popular concrete plain tiles also means that developers like Gentoo Homes can keep costs within budget without compromising on aesthetics.”
