Leisure sites reap benefits of repair not replace approach

Holiday and caravan parks across the UK are saving thousands of items from going to landfill unnecessarily by adopting a 'Repair not Replace’ approach to their refurbishment programmes.

According to the UK's leading surface repair specialists, Plastic Surgeon, leading holiday park operators such as Parkdean, John Fowler, Bourne Leisure and Luxury Holiday Home Group Haulfryn Homes are leading the way by taking a more sustainable approach to their refurbishment programmes avoiding unnecessary wastage and replacement of damaged surfaces by having them repaired.

In 2012, members of the Plastic Surgeon team have been called in to repair over 1000 damaged surfaces on holiday parks including exterior caravan panels, doors, shower trays, worktops, facias and white goods.

As a result, surfaces that would previously have been ripped out and replaced have been fully restored, not only saving many thousands of pounds in replacement costs but preventing over 14 tonnes of materials from having to go to landfill unnecessarily since 2011.

According to Plastic Surgeon MD Rob Mouser the ‘Repair not Replace’ approach is being adopted by increasing numbers of holiday park operators across the UK who are seeing both the cost and environmental benefits - both for out of season refurbishment programmes and as a way of avoiding inconvenient rip out and replace maintenance through the main holiday season.

“Properties on holiday parks can take a real battering during a typical holiday season and surface damage is inevitable. But repairing a damaged surface to the point where you cannot see the original damage is a specialist task and one that holiday parks are increasingly waking up to the benefits of.

"Thanks to the advances in repair technology a wide range of surfaces that would have been previously simply ripped out and replaced can now be fully restored which not only provides a real cost benefit to the park operator but means that in many cases, the inconvenience of a rip out and replacement for a kitchen work surface or bathroom shower tray in the height of the season can be avoided," said Mr Mouser.

Throughout the course of 2012, Plastic Surgeon’s team of Finishers undertook repairs to over 220,000 surfaces saving over 67,000 items, preventing over 2 million kilogrammes of waste from going into landfill – working in the construction and house building sectors in addition to the wider leisure and holiday sectors including cruise lines and hotel chains.

The Finishers are equipped with mobile hand held computers that allow them to record every repair and take photos of the before and after damage. This information feeds into Plastic Surgeon’s unique online customer reporting system, which provides details of every single repair that has been carried out on a park that park operators can then use for their own reporting purposes.
