The construction of a brand new £12 million Cancer Centre has begun on the Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup.
Designed by architects IBI Group, when built the new oncology centre will provide patients with a local, convenient, high quality service run by staff from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
It will provide radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment, as well as an information and advice service for patients and their families.
“Currently, patients who require radio therapy have to travel into Central London to receive treatment,” said Kelly Mallinson, architect at IBI Group. “This purpose-designed facility gives users and staff access to first-class facilities, improving the overall healthcare experience.”
The new building will offer chemotherapy and radiotherapy services supported by two specially designed linear accelerator rooms. Benefiting from ample parking, patients will also enjoy spacious, naturally lit accommodation with admission to a beautifully designed garden for contemplation and relaxation. Created by IBI Group’s landscape architects, this external space encompasses over 35 species of native plants, to encourage and support local wildlife species, whilst providing a holistic and complementary environment for patients during treatment.
The Cancer Centre is being developed and equipped by the American firm Healthcare Technologies International (HTI) and will be maintained by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust which owns and manages the Queen Mary Hospital site. Built by Arien Contractors, the scheme is due to complete in 2016.
