Abby Chandler, Marketing Manager at Heckmondwike FB, looks at how school flooring design can create stimulating environments that help young people to learn.
“Research by the University of Salford and Nightingale Associates found that the classroom environment can affect a child’s progress by up to 25% a year, showing the importance of creating a setting that provides the very best learning opportunities.
For effective learning to take place, schools and colleges need to visibly define their space to engage with students and set clear expectations. Zoning is therefore a growing trend in education, which is particularly popular for providing structure to large open plan areas. Bright contrasting colours can be used to create striking designs which enhance learning environments and clearly communicate the purpose of an area to students and teachers.
Our Supacord carpet is widely specified in the education sector as it is renowned for its inspiring range of colours and its robust, durable nature. On a recent project we supplied Supacord to a specialist music school Dixons Music Primary in Bradford, which was used throughout the classrooms, nursery, corridors and stairs.
The inspirational design of the flooring features a stunning band of different colours including red, yellow, orange, willow, purple, blue, green, azure, aquamarine and anthracite. Linking closely to the musical ethos of the school, this eyecatching design represents the colours of a graphic equalizer! In addition, our Diamond carpet was installed in the school’s entrance area in Charcoal, to provide added protection and enhance the longevity of the rest of the carpet from shoeborne dirt, grit and moisture.
Many schools are also choosing to maximise their floor space with messages and designs that reinforce their values, as part of increasing attainment levels. With advances in carpet manufacturing, we can integrate logos and value statements within classroom, entrance area or corridor carpet – to continually keep pupils inspired!
For projects where sustainability is important, Supacord is regularly specified due to its excellent
environmental credentials, as it has been assessed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and has gained a BRE Global A+ environmental rating.
As schools increasingly recognize the link between the design of their classroom environment and the performance of students, we expect to see the trend to specify Supacord carpet continue. The ultimate aim is to create the most positive, dynamic learning environment, as part of inspiring pupils to achieve.”
Heckmondwike FB is one of the leading carpet suppliers to the education, commercial and public sectors and is well-known for the excellent value, durability and high performance of its products.
