Leaderflush Shapland’s expertise in the mental health sector has enabled the company to develop an anti-ligature doorset range that helps reduce the risk of self-harm and provides specifiers with a simple and robust integrated performance doorset.
To assist specifiers, Leaderflush Shapland has introduced an innovative and broad-ranging group of anti-ligature door furniture, door closing and access devices that can be selected in a variety of combinations with its doors to create integrated anti-ligature performance doorsets that provide the high security and design attributes necessary in mental health institutions, prisons and courts.
The doors and frames are precisely machined to incorporate the anti-ligature hardware. By manufacturing the complete doorset in a controlled factory environment specifiers can be sure every component is fit for purpose and Leaderflush Shapland’s in-house testing capability puts it in a position to deliver on all future CE marking requirements.
It is critical the most appropriate doors, frames and ironmongery are used in high-risk spaces in mental health buildings such as bedrooms and en-suites to reduce the risk of harm. These should be used in conjunction with veneers and finishes that are specifically designed to create a calm environment and promote patient well-being.
Leaderflush Shapland’s experience in this market ensures it understands the varying requirements of each mental health setting and that, for example, the specification for a psychiatric intensive care unit will differ from a dementia unit. This knowledge which addresses issues such as durability, ligature points, anti-barricade systems, ease of access, observation requirements and way finding, enables Leaderflush Shapland’s technical experts to help specifiers identify the right product solutions for their project needs.
New product development manager Stephen Hutsby said: “By pulling together all the solutions we supply to the mental health sector we provide specifiers with a product that meets the high performance criteria demanded in these specialist sectors which includes a high level of durability. Leaderflush Shapland is a single source supplier for integrated performance doorsets that includes doors, frames and anti-ligature ironmongery.”
Its commitment to providing effective solutions to issues faced by the mental health sector means Leaderflush Shapland is always looking to improve its range, and has recently added the AL3S secondary barricade override.
The product’s secondary override mechanism is accessed by removing just one anti-tamper screw and allows staff to bypass the lock mechanism from outside a room. This means they can effectively disable the lock even if it is being held by the handle or the key has broken off in the cylinder.
Leaderflush Shapland has successfully provided doorsets to many of the country’s hospitals, including Kingsway Mental Health hospital in Derby where it supplied 570 performance doorsets. Working alongside project architects Gilling Dod the skilled Leaderflush Shapland team helped deliver the anti-ligature doorset solution specified for the high risk situations at this facility.
