Modernisation and refurbishment of the Penbryn Function suite at Aberystwyth University was carried out by main Contractor T O Jones & Sons Ltd. Gareth Lewis Architects specified a Hunter Douglas 84R ceiling, finished in white and installed on curved carriers to convex and concave radii to form a waveform pattern. Panels were installed with no joint profile, leaving open joints to maximise airflow and create a feeling of space. The waveform shape of the ceiling added visual interest as well as reflecting and diffusing light from the pendant light fittings, wall mounted up-lighters and natural light from the windows.
The Hunter Douglas 84R ceiling system consists of round-edged panels which are easily clipped onto a curved carrier system to create concave, convex or undulating ceilings. The carrier can be supplied curved with a minimum radius of 1250 mm or alternatively the panels can be curved to a fixed radius of 325 mm, achieving dramatic visual effects while also accommodating varying heights. Panels are joined using an engineered panel splice, to provide a perfect joint detail.
Curved 84 R ceilings can be installed by using either a flexible carrier fixed to a former or alternatively by curving a standard carrier. The carrier is provided with prongs to accommodate the panels in standard module of 100 mm, creating a 16mm gap between the panels which can be left open or in filled to create a closed system. The panels are made to measure in any length from 800 mm up to maximum of 6000 mm. The panels are available in a range of standard Hunter Douglas colours and finishes. They can also be specified for exterior use or perforated with a non-woven acoustic fleece, where there is a requirement for enhanced acoustic absorption.
