An extensive re-roofing project on a West Midlands house has recently been completed using more than 13,000 of Marley's new Fired Sienna Hawkins clay plain tiles to give it the weathered heritage look that can usually only be found on tiles from the reclaim market.
The property, a detached 1930s house in Sutton Coldfield, had recently been refurbished by owner Rob Langston. Rob commented:
“I purchased the house in early 2010 for myself and my family to live in. From the results of our survey it was clear that the original roof covering was coming to the end of its life so would need replacing. We also wanted to construct a new garage building attached to the house.
“I chose Marley's Fired Sienna Hawkins clay plain tile to replace the old roof tiles as it looks very similar to the original roofing and is in keeping with the other period features in the building. Whilst we wanted to use new tiles, it was important to achieve the reclaimed effect. Also, as we have added a garage extension to the house, it’s great that both the new roof and the old roof have matching finishes.”
Robbie McLeish, project manager at Beaumont Construction, who managed the project said:
“Initially, I was a little concerned that working with a product I hadn’t used before, Fired Sienna, might pose a challenge. However, after using the tiles it seems that my fears were completely unfounded: It lays well, looks fantastic and the overall effect is excellent. In fact, it was generally very easy to work with. The reclaimed look subtly works over the whole roof and the colours also blend well with the existing fixtures and fittings.”
Marley's Hawkins clay plain tiles have been manufactured and installed on roofs for over 150 years. Advances in clay technology means that the Hawkins single camber range combines heritage with the most modern firing techniques to produce a unique colour range at an affordable price. Easy to install and machine-made for precision, the Hawkins range offers the powerful combination of affordability and performance.
Richard Bishop, campaign manager at Marley, said:
“The new Fired Sienna Hawkins clay plain tile has the appearance of a reclaimed tile but with all the benefits of a modern tile. Each tile is individually crafted to consist of irregularities and imperfections on the surface, similar to those of a weathered, aged tile.
“In the Fired Sienna shade, the orange and blue colour mix varies subtly from tile to tile, adding to the distinctive finish and traditional feel of the product. Additionally, the Fired Sienna colour has been priced competitively to offer a real alternative to anyone who would normally consider opting for a reclaimed tile.”
Marley is the UK’s leading manufacturer of clay plain tiles and fittings. Marley’s clay plain tiles have excellent environmental credentials and can achieve an A+ rating in the Building Research Establishment’s (BRE) Green Guide to Specification.
