IBI Group has been commissioned to prepare a strategy and design framework for the UK’s leading science and research cluster.

The ‘Science Vale’ is located south of Oxford, along the upper reaches of the Thames.

The area is home to the largest concentration of research and development activity in Western Europe and contains world leading research and technology establishments including the European Space Agency.

The ambition is to consolidate this area as the first choice location for internationally renowned business and research. However, achieving this requires the coordinated development of the area’s growth to ensure that not only are the right employment opportunities accommodated but the towns have the right mix of housing choice and lifestyle to attract the skilled workforce that tech companies demand.

Working with consultants Colliers International and Mott MacDonald, IBI has been appointed by South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse district councils to liaise with a wide range of stakeholders to clarify the strategic vision and strategy for growth for Science Vale. This strategy will be followed by a framework to guide the design of places including the important transport hub at Didcot.

IBI team leader Marcus Wilshere highlighted the importance of this project: “Realising the potential of science and technology as a driver for growth is essential for the competitiveness not just of the region but of ‘UK Plc’. This is one of the most exciting planning challenges in the country and we are proud that IBI Group has been chosen to lead on this work.”
