Sanctuary invited local partners along to see the excellent progress being made at its Scarletts Well development, a £7.4 million scheme to build 61 affordable new homes in Bodmin.

With investment from both Cornwall Council and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the Scarletts Well scheme will include 27 apartments and 34 houses, all to be made available on an affordable rental basis.

The development is being built by Sanctuary’s construction partner in Cornwall, Kier Living, not far from the famous Camel Trail and the historic Bodmin Jail, which is now a family tourist attraction.

As well as providing much needed affordable new homes in Bodmin, the Scarletts Well scheme promises a number of training and employment opportunities during construction, including work placements and site visits by local schools and colleges.

Neil Clements, Sanctuary’s development manager for the south west, said: “The development at Scarletts Well really is something to celebrate. Thanks to the support of Cornwall Council and the HCA, we are building a range of high quality homes that will be made available to local people at an affordable rent. There will also be educational and employment opportunities created during the construction process, bringing a further benefit to the local community.”

Cornwall Council cabinet member for homes and communities Geoff Brown said: “I am delighted to see for myself how well this project is progressing.  Housing is a key priority for the Council and we are committed to working with partners such as Sanctuary Group to provide much needed housing at affordable rents for local families.”

Versha Koria, Area Manager at the HCA, said: “It is great to see work starting at Scarletts Well. We know affordable housing remains a key issue across Cornwall and so look forward to seeing these much-needed homes completed and hearing more about the training and skills that are linked as a part of the investment we have made.”

John Titcombe, Kier Living’s Director, said: “We have a great team on this site and the works are progressing well. We enjoy working with Sanctuary to deliver such vital housing projects, while also using the development to offer training opportunities to local people in the area.”

The Scarletts Well development is expected to complete in early 2015.
