KGM Roofing have appointed CA Building Products to deliver the materials for the building envelope on Crossrail’s Old Oak Common depot, which will be home to Bombardier's new operations hub.

The development will comprise the main, custom-built 24,000m2 depot maintenance facilities, which will house Crossrail rolling stock, as well as other, smaller ancillary buildings.

The multi-purpose development, which will create 244 jobs and 16 apprenticeship opportunities, will also comprise: train wash facilities, general offices, canteens, kitchens, craft workshops, warehouses and storage buildings, as well as surface car parks, commercial access and estate roads.

Gavin Harriman, Business Development Manager for KGM Roofing, cladding contractor on the project commented: “This marks a significant phase in the delivery of the new railway and we are delighted to be working in close collaboration with CA Building Products. Together our combined expertise will showcase the very best in building envelope design and innovation.”

The existing, disused Old Oak Common Depot, which will be fully demolished and dismantled prior to the commencement of work on the new development, occupies a large site in an industrial area of west London and has been used as a maintenance and stabling facility since 1906.

CA Group’s River-Therm, a built-up site assembled secret fix roof system, has been selected for the project. The system is fully walkable and incorporates a continuous drainage channel, eliminating the main cause of leaks in large buildings. The system comes PV ready facilitating the introduction of solar panels at a later date. CA will also be supplying FATRA non-slip gutters on the project.

The company’s CA32/1000W sheets have been specified for use on the walls in order to meet the architects desired requirements on the building’s aesthetics. The structure also incorporates a curved feature wall, which will be clad in CA Group’s Prime Rainscreen system, further increasing aesthetic appeal.

Neil Alderson, Commercial Director for CA Building Products, concluded: “We are extremely proud to have been chosen to work on such a prestigious development. We have an excellent working relationship with KGM Roofing and would like to thank them for allowing us to demonstrate our innovative approach to building envelope design.   We are primed and ready to make a significant contribution to what will undoubtedly become a world-class, affordable railway.”

In support of cladding contractor, KGM Roofing, a Division of Lindum Group Limited and main contractor Vinci Construction, CA Building Products will be completing on-site eaves rolling activities with sheets nearing 100 metres in length.

The principal architects are Mott MacDonald and RPS Planning & Development. Work is scheduled to commence at the beginning of June.
