Apollo Fire Detectors’ industry-leading Discovery range of fire detection products has been chosen to provide life and property protection at a community-based care facility in the London Borough of Enfield.

St Michael’s Primary Care Centre provides a range of community health services to the people of Enfield. The site encompasses six buildings including a unique inpatient service – The Magnolia Unit.

Drax UK was contracted to replace an ageing fire detection system with new, reliable, technology that met the current needs of St Michael’s and did so while meeting the Centre's limited budget. There was an urgent need to have a reliable, accurate system in place quickly. From confirmation of the order, the Drax team completed the installation of the new equipment in just under eight weeks.

The local NHS Trust specified an open protocol approach so Drax recommended the supply and installation of six Advanced MX Series control panels, with Apollo Discovery devices installed throughout the site.

Keith Hickman, Key Account Manager at Drax UK explains: "We regularly use Apollo systems because of the company’s reputation for reliability. In an environment such as a health centre, where the evacuation process is predominately 'one out - all out', the client has to have a system they can trust. Apollo's Discovery range offers that guarantee, along with an extensive choice of detectors ideal for this type of environment.

"Apollo's open protocol approach also allows us to install protection that meets the unique requirements of each site. For example, the Trust required fire alarm and fault conditions from the Centre to be signalled to a remote site several miles away in Tottenham. In order to achieve this, we installed our own AMS TCP/IP communications node to transmit the signals via the Trust’s network infrastructure. Using an open protocol system made planning for this process considerably easier.

"Our team has always enjoyed working with Apollo products, not just for their reliability, but because they are easy and straightforward to install. This was particularly important when we installed equipment in the Magnolia Ward. The nature of the care taking place there meant we had to carry out the fit around inpatients. It was, therefore, essential that we were able to do this with minimum disruption. All of the team were familiar with Apollo, which allowed for a smooth and efficient installation."
