Marley’s brand new range of authentic Canterbury handmade clay plain tiles have been used on a contemporary show home installation based on the design of a real home.

The roof, designed by Oakworth Homes and Benchmark Self Build, features 2,000 clay roof tiles from Marley’s premium handmade range which launched earlier this year to meet growing demand for an authentic yet durable handmade clay plain tile solution.

The unique roof installation used all three tile colours from the Canterbury range with the Chailey, a vibrant orange, Loxleigh, a semi-sand finished with an antique blend of red and grey shades and Burford, a rich red-brown tone in a fully sanded texture.

The use of the handmade clay plain tiles provided a traditional aesthetic for the roof, porch and vertical tiling areas on the show home, which was recently on display at a trade show in Birmingham.

To create a striking contrast on the show home, the designers also specified Marley's new Cedral Click weatherboard. It is the UK’s first fibre cement tongue and groove weatherboard system that offers a contemporary flat finish. Its ease-of-installation and low maintenance make Cedral Click the perfect choice for the creation of a stunning new home or a refurbishment project.

The finished result was an oak timber framed building with a rustic feel, which was based on the design of a real home planned to be built in a West Sussex village.

Sarah Jackson, marketing product manager from Marley, comments: “We’ve been pleased to support this fascinating project. Our Canterbury range of handmade clay plain tiles was only recently launched, so it’s been great to see their use on a unique show home which blends heritage and modern aesthetics. For anyone considering using clay plain tiles on a self build or renovation project, it’s provided an opportunity to see the effect that can be achieved with the right blend of colours. The traditional clay tiles complemented the rustic charm of the timber framed building and gave the roof the desired handmade finish with the natural beauty of clay.”

The Canterbury range gives a distinctive handmade finish to any roof, with each tile as unique as the hands that made them. Premium projects and heritage sites can benefit from the high quality aesthetic of these richly coloured tiles, particularly in areas subject to specific planning requirements and where handmade roof tiles form part of the architectural vernacular.
