Dream Weaver 9 is a spaceship in the Channel 4 and Sony commissioned drama, Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, based on the short stories of the legendary science fiction novelist.

Formica Group’s laminate was specified for the shuttle’s interior surfaces to create a bold and futuristic sci-fi aesthetic.

The show’s designers specified the award winning Frosted Jade from the Formica Collection as they wanted a high shine, glossy material to complement the metal exterior.

The product also needed to have an excellent surface to reflect and enhance the LED lighting within the ship. The Frosted Jade laminate was specifically chosen for its superior finish and increased surface depth, delivering a better production quality on camera.

The Dream Weaver flight deck is adorned with Matt Bronze Aluminium laminate from the DecoMetal range. The material was chosen for its durability and easy to clean properties, which made it ideal for the daily rigour of space travel.

Another reason Formica laminate was specified is for its flexibility. A key design feature in the spaceship is its sweeping organic wall curves and distinct 3D wall lighting.

The easy to cut Formica laminate was spilt to create 3D wall projections. The sheen from the material was further enhanced with LED lighting, to achieve the desired effect.

A total of 38m2 of Formica laminate was provided for the interior of Dream Weaver 9. The end result was an enhanced interior design of the shuttle, demonstrating the use of Formica in new, exciting and innovative contexts.
