Johnstone’s Trade’s heritage colour palette has been used to stunning effect during the refurbishment of an impressive Victorian hotel on the Isle of Wight.
The majestic Ryde Castle - an imposing 120-year-old hotel built to reflect the style of a medieval castle - overlooks a picturesque marina and offers spectacular sea views across the Solent and beyond. The recent refurbishment was designed to refresh the hotel’s décor while retaining its unique character for visitors to enjoy.
Johnstone’s extensive range of colours was integral to the success of the project. Hampshire-based decorating firm Haylock and Pittman worked closely with Johnstone’s colour consultants to create a fitting colour scheme, using a variety of pastel shades typical of the period. Contrasting shades were applied to highlight original architectural features such as egg and dart patterns and full dental cornices, which were reintroduced by the design team.
Using Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt for the walls and ceilings and Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Eggshell for the interior woodwork, the whole hotel was refreshed over the course of four months. Both products were specially tinted at Johnstone’s Decorating Centre on the Isle of Wight and are guaranteed to provide a long-lasting quality finish, which is also easy-to-clean - perfect for a busy hotel.
For the exterior windows and doors, Johnstone’s Opaque Wood Finish was selected in an off-white shade - commonly seen on buildings of this period. Its low maintenance, microporous coating has been specifically designed to protect woodwork from water and the effects of UV rays as well as reducing blistering, cracking and peeling.
Adrian Haylock of Haylock and Pittman said: “Using what I consider to be tried and tested products like these guarantees customer satisfaction and in turn ensures we can achieve repeat business. From a practical perspective, the application is great and the service I’ve had, particularly at my local Johnstone’s Decorating Centre on the Isle of Wight, has been superb. Being able to have the products we needed tinted to the exact shades required quickly and easily meant everything ran as smoothly as possible.”
