Assessing indoor air quality and mechanical ventilation with HomeLINK

Martin Przewozny, Relationship Manager at Aico, used his own home to assess how ventilation systems perform in real conditions.

His 2013 property was fitted with a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, designed to remove stale air and supply fresh, filtered air efficiently. However, due to poor installation, the system failed to control humidity effectively.

Persistent moisture issues, especially in the bathroom, led to condensation, damp surfaces, and concerns about mould and long-term damage. Investigation revealed the MVHR unit was undersized and installed with inefficient flexible PVC ducting, restricting airflow.

In April 2025, a full upgrade was completed. This included installing a correctly sized MVHR unit, replacing ductwork with rigid stainless steel, and upgrading vents and valves.

Martin’s home already uses Aico Environmental Sensors connected to the HomeLINK Gateway, enabling real-time monitoring via the HomeLINK app. This data provided clear insights into humidity patterns before and after the upgrade.

Post-installation results showed rapid humidity reduction after showering, less time at high moisture levels, and improved overall air quality.

This case highlights two key lessons: proper system design is essential, and data-driven monitoring provides clarity, helping housing providers ensure healthier, well-ventilated homes.
