PVC plays key role in biodiversity

A new retail park in the heart of London is set to achieve a ‘good’ BREAAM rating, with PVC playing a key role in the ecology credentials.

The final section of Greenwich Shopping Park has now been handed over, with the construction of five units that will be ‘home’ to, among other household brands, Matalan, Starbucks, Frankie & Benny’s.

Designed by Ratcliffe Groves Partnership (RGP) and built by Cardy Construction, the units feature Protan PVC membrane on the roofs.

Roofing contractor RKC Roofing adhered just under 600m2 of 1.5mm Protan EX-A fleece laminated membrane to each of the exposed roofs of units A-D. A similar quantity of Protan Bio-Diverse G membrane, also 1.5mm thick, was used on the two-storey Unit E, a ‘high profile’ corner unit containing Frankie & Benny’s on the ground floor and the site security suite and management offices above.

“It was a brownfield site, that, having been unoccupied for years, had become a habitat for plants and wildlife,” explained RGP director Nick Ratcliffe. “The aim with the bio diverse roof was to recreate that environment at high level, to replace the habitat. It also formed part of our environmental credentials for BREAAM.”

“A green roof was specified, so we suggested Protan as the solution,” added RKC’s Lee Jones. “As we were using Protan for the adhered roofs, it offered all involved a best value solution to use the same source for all the roofing membrane.”

Protan EX-A membrane has a proven durability of 30+ years, and is quick to install.

Like all Protan’s single ply membranes, EX-A is developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment: it is certified to ≤ -30°. Protan G membrane is a glass fibre reinforced, microbe durable PVC membrane for gravel ballasted roofs, inverted roofs, and green roofs. Protan G membrane can withstand high and low temperatures and attack by micro-organisms. Loose-laid, it provides a fast and safe means of creating an FLL compliant roof.

Protan membranes achieve durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled in line with latest Building Regulations, and are fully BBA certified.

Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the top 3 membrane manufacturers in Europe. A full support service, from RIBA-approved CPDs, NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice is provided from Protan UK’s Warrington office and training facility.
