Liquid roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, Sika Liquid Plastics is celebrating awards success after taking two of the gongs at the LRWA (Liquid Roofing & Waterproofing Association) Awards Ceremony 2018.

Part of Sika, the global building products specialist that offers a wide range of advanced solutions from basement to roof, Sika Liquid Plastics was shortlisted for a total of seven LRWA awards across four categories.

The company triumphed in the Liquid Roofing Project of the Year in a Buried Application category with The Flower Bowl, a new build leisure complex with a distinctive domed green roof, delivered by QA Contractor, WH Hughes & Sons. It was also successful in winning the Trainer of the Year Award, with training manager, Mark Monk, accepting the honour on behalf of the Applications team at Sika.

Designed to offer a range of attractions including an indoor bowling alley, a curling rink, a crazy golf course and golf simulator, a cinema and restaurants, The Flower Bowl is part of an existing garden centre development in a semi-rural Lancashire location close to Preston. The new building features a curved green roof, reflecting the local landscape of rolling hills, and there are even plans to graze sheep on the roof.

Sam Kidd, Area Technical Manager from Sika Liquid Plastics, comments: “Our warm roof system was ideal for this unusual 6000m2 project, because it enabled the contractor to easily follow the profile of the structure and carry out the complex detailing while providing a robust solution for the green roof. It demonstrates the versatility within the Sika Liquid Plastics range, which enables us to offer tailored specifications for both refurbishment and new build projects, supporting the design intent for the project and the technical requirements of the installation team.”

Sika Liquid Plastics’ commitment to supporting specifiers and installation teams was rewarded with the Trainer of the Year Award, chosen by the LRWA’s Training Manager, Chris Bussens.

It is the second time that Mark has been nominated for this accolade and the first time he has won the award.

Mark Comments: “Training is fundamental in what we do to support product performance and installation best practice. I’m delighted that Sika Liquid Plastics’ investment in this area has been recognised by this LRWA Award and I’m delighted to accept it on behalf of the whole Sika roofing applications team.”

Ian Muddiman, Head of Applications at Sika Liquid Plastics comments: “Working as part of a talented and experienced training team at Sika Liquid Plastics, Mark has played an important role in maintaining the quality and expertise delivered through our Quality Assured (QA) Contractor scheme by delivering a high standard of training at our in-house training centre and with contractors on site.

“He has also made a significant contribution to nurturing skills and developing young talent in the liquid applied membranes community across the UK and around the world. His commitment to travelling all over the country to support the training of young people by delivering LRWA Basic Competency Programme (BCP) training makes him a huge asset to the industry as well as Sika Liquid Plastics and we are hugely proud of his achievement.”

Other projects using Sika Liquid Plastics systems recognised as finalists in the awards included The National Space Centre, Willows After School Club, Intu Merry Hill, Birmingham Law Courts and Poulton Lancelyn Primary School.

Sarah Spink, CEO of the LRWA comments: “Sika Liquid Plastics’ success in these awards not only highlights the variety and versatility of the company’s systems but also reiterates the company’s continuing commitment to driving product innovation and raising standards of specification and installation.

“Liquid roofing is a growth sector and it is through the best practice, quality assured approach of specialists like Sika Liquid Plastics that we will continue to raise the profile of liquid systems as the preferred choice across refurbishment and new build projects.”
