Featuring a striking expanse of full length Andersen windows and patio doors supplied by Black Millwork, The Orchard is an award winning self build property in Somerset, that skillfully combines modern and traditional aesthetics.

Set on a picturesque plot with spectacular views of the rolling Somerset countryside, owners Ian and Georgina Blackshaw were keen to capitalise on the location’s potential.  Maximising light and showcasing the surroundings were fundamental aspects of the design – achieved by a dramatic wall of glazing that runs the length of the 220m2 single storey building.

Inside the property, a more traditional aesthetic is created with the use of wooden beams and classic detailing, creating an appealing contrast with the modern exterior – and the windows needed to fit within these double design requirements.  What’s more, as part of the approval process, it was stipulated by the planning authority that the windows and doors must be timber framed.

“Our previous experience of solid wood frames was that they need a lot of ongoing maintenance,” commented Ian.  “The Orchard is our retirement project and the last thing I want is to spend my retirement repainting window frames.  So the Andersen windows were the ideal solution as they have a vinyl protective layer on the outside that means they don’t need to be repainted.  Also, the combination of modern exterior and warm wooden interior blended perfectly with our design plans.”

Ian specified seven Andersen 400 Series Casement windows and 13 sets of Andersen 400 series patio doors, all with a pine interior and Sandtone external finish.  Andersen windows and patio doors feature a unique Perma-Shield system that forms a tough protective shell to safeguard the inner wood.  This exclusive vinyl cladding repels water, and resists dents and corrosion, keeping the window in top condition and reducing future maintenance.

In addition, Ian specified two Andersen 400 Series Flexiframe Polygon speciality windows, creating a unique focal point at the house’s gable end.  The use of creative design elements such as this, led to the building achieving Highly Commended in the Mendip District Building Excellence Awards 2012 and a finalist at the LABC (South West) Building Excellence Awards 2012.

“The Andersen windows and doors supplied by Black Millwork have had a massive impact on the overall look and feel of our home,” Ian concluded.  “The whole building is flooded with light and we are able to enjoy the fantastic views over the surrounding countryside – we are more than happy with the windows and the effect they create.”
