As part of the Upper Rissington, Gloucestershire development project, SSQ Slate has worked with Kier Construction to provide approximately 10,000 Del Carmen First grade slates for installation on the new community centre roof.

As part of a wider development project, incorporating a new school and housing for local residents, the new Rissington community centre is set within a wider housing scheme.

On this scheme there was a real need to ensure that all materials used would be able to contribute to Kier Construction’s overall environmental target. As such, the longevity of any products chosen needed to be carefully considered, as did the aesthetic look of the materials too.

David Chatfield, Quantity Surveyor for Kier Construction commented: “We decided to use SSQ Slates on the Rissington Community Centre project because they provided superior slates at best market value.”

In order to achieve a professional finish, McDonnell Price Roofing Contractors were tasked with the installation of SSQ’s Del Carmen First grade slates.

Brandon McDonnell, Business Development Manager at McDonnell Price said: “In order to achieve a professional finish, delivering an aesthetic look and feel that was sympathetic to the slate itself, we installed the Del Carmen slates using aluminium nails. Measuring 500x250mm, the slates lent themselves well to this project, ensuring maximum coverage without impairing the final look.”

SSQ’s Del Carmen slate combines a faintly rippled riven texture with a deep blue-black colour and characteristic longitudinal grain.

Del Carmen is proven to be of such consistently high quality that it is one of the few imported slates that has in the past, been accepted for use as an alternative to indigenous material. Its outstanding aesthetics and 75-year guarantee, based on thorough test results, make SSQ’s Del Carmen slate ideal for use on all manner of projects.
