After a successful installation of Heradesign ceilings from Knauf AMF in the education rooms at the Tate Modern, Heradesign was chosen for the community room in the Tate’s new landmark building, the Switch House, on London’s South Bank.

Tate Modern houses one of the largest collections of modern artwork in the world. The Switch House helps meet the needs of this contemporary art gallery by offering a range of additional facilities: unique gallery spaces, improved amenities for the Tate’s popular learning programmes and public areas for relaxation.

The new development was created by architects Herzog & de Meuron, who also undertook the original power station conversion. The architect worked closely with Tate’s learning team to rework the learning spaces located next to the Turbine Hall. Heradesign in matt black was specified for these rooms to create a uniform finish that does not reflect light onto the glass partitions and surfaces. Heradesign is highly durable and its textured appearance enhances the industrial heritage of the buildings.

The Tate wanted to recreate the same effect for the Switch House’s community room. Heradesign was directly fixed to a concealed metal grid system to provide the requirements of a black finish without any visible grid whilst also providing Class A sound absorption to reduce reverberation. Heradesign’s outstanding sound control helps improve speech intelligibility and ensure conversations remain private.

Stuart Mansfield at Fireclad Limited oversaw the installation in the community room and commented: “Heradesign was very straight forward to install. Integration with the different services went smoothly first time. I would definitely work with Knauf AMF and Heradesign again.”

Heradesign is manufactured from sustainably sourced wood-wool which is what gives it its distinctive woven surface. Heradesign is available in an unlimited number of custom colours including those from popular systems such as RAL, NCS or StoColor, making Heradesign a versatile choice for creating unique interiors.

Heradesign offers flexibility because it can be fitted in a number of ways: directly to the original ceiling, as a suspended ceiling with exposed or concealed grid options, or hung as either rafts or fins. Heradesign can also be fitted as wall panels to provide colour and sound absorption. All Knauf AMF ceilings are fully demountable making access and maintenance to the services in the void quick and simple.
