At a new 42,000 seat stadium in Poland the specification of a high performance hot and cold water system needed to be durable, vandal resistant and heavy duty as well as being able to handle the massive water usage demands of fans.
Tigris K1, a multilayer press-fit system designed for potable water, sanitary and heating applications was specified to meet such exceptional requirements.
Designed by JSK architects, Wroclaw Stadium features a stunning transparent exterior, described as a Chinese lantern, which makes it possible to change the colour of the outer walls. Home to football team, SWK Slask Wroclaw, this multi-purpose complex also includes offices, conference halls, a casino and a fitness centre.
For a project where water supply was so critical, Wavin was actively involved at the earliest stage of the construction process to ensure the most appropriate hot and cold water system was used. Offering long term performance in the most demanding conditions and temperatures, the Tigris K1 system met the demands of stadium users and proved ideal.
Comprising multilayer composite pipe with high performance plastic polyphenylsulphone (PPSU) fittings, the Tigris K1 system offers resistance to high temperatures, corrosion and stress cracking ensuring each connection is extremely robust and strong. Available in a range of dimensions from 16 to 63mm and with specific adaptors for other systems such as Hep2O and copper, this secure and versatile press-fit system offers a 10 year guarantee.
The aluminium layer in the pipes reduces thermal expansion, making them comparable to copper. The flexibility of the multilayer composite pipes results in the need for fewer connectors, simplifying installation and significantly reducing cost. The patented hexagonal shape of the fitting design also significantly reduces the required push-in forces which aids installation while the ‘Defined Leak Function’ brings extra safety where it identifies unpressed fittings during the pressure test.
Along with commercial applications such as stadiums, Tigris K1 is ideal for health and hygiene applications such as operating theatres or food preparation facilities due to its corrosion and scale-resistant plastic system. It has also been proven in continuously operated recirculating systems such as hospitals, apartment buildings, care homes and hotels. These water-replenished systems will deliver a constant supply of hot water efficiently and reliably as well as helping prevent the spread of infection.
In addition to the specification of Tigris K1, Wavin systems were used throughout the stadium, both above and below ground. These included polyethylene systems for all water management, Wavin X-Stream and septic tanks for sewers, SiTech low-noise soil and waste systems and the Wavin QuickStream siphonic roof drainage system.
“Choosing Wavin products allowed us to install all the stadium’s sanitary systems efficiently and professionally. With Wavin as our chosen supplier, we worked well together under real time pressures,” commented Jerzy Zwiech, President of Exprim Wroclaw. “Wavin is a reliable partner and fully kept to the very tight delivery schedule, ensuring we met all time commitments."
With the Wroclaw Stadium fully operational and having played host to football and other major sporting events, Wavin has ensured this stunning stadium has proven high performance plumbing and drainage systems that will offer durability and reliability for the long term.
