Newhey Carpets, a specialist designer and leading British manufacturer of innovative, high performance and sustainable commercial carpets recently supplied over 3,500 square metres of luxurious Colortec+ and Graphics Tufted carpet for Queens Hotel Cheltenham, a spectacular Grade II heritage property in the heart of the city.
The hotel was built in 1838, the year of Queen Victoria’s coronation, of whom it is named after. After a complete renovation the hotel reopened its doors in November 2015: joining the exclusive MGallery by Sofitel collection. The luxury hotel offers a truly majestic setting with its décor and architecture encapsulating all the elegance, heritage and grandeur of the neo-classical era.
Newhey’s design team collaborated with Frances Blackham at Trevillion Interiors to design and manufacturer over 3,500 square metres of carpet for the public areas and guestrooms. The carpet was designed to complement listed wallpaper designed by the infamous Pugin, famed also for designing the interior of the Palace of Westminster, which lines the iconic and beautifully preserved staircase.
Frances Blackham, Design Director at Trevillion commented: “The hotel itself was referred to historically as The Noblest building of its kind in Europe, of Palladian style demonstrating the perfect proportions and symmetry typical of Georgian period, we chose to consider symmetry and geometric pattern to influence much of the design intent.”
“The carpet design had to sit well alongside heritage detail and in particular on the main staircase which features the historic Pugin Wallpaper. The carpet had to be neutral enough to not complicate the space yet sufficiently detailed to provide a practical solution. The design concept was maintained throughout the property simply altering the scale and combination of neutral tones to deliver a subtle difference to main public areas, function room and bedroom schemes.”
The bespoke carpets and rugs were created using Newhey’s innovative Colortec+ technology. The product is tufted using computer yarn placement technology, a high-tech innovation providing a durable product to deal with high footfall. This carpet construction also allowed for a cost effective solution.
With over 40 years of technical excellence and constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation in sustainability, Newhey Carpets has recently developed a revolutionary carpet secondary backing system, ‘evobac’. Featuring on every design, ‘evobac’ is made using 100% recycled plastic bottles and offers a sustainable option for the hotel.
This groundbreaking innovation has recently been used on a number of high profile hotels such as The Park Inn Radisson at Heathrow, Dorsett Shepherds Bush in London, Tilal Liwa Hotel in Abu Dhabi and most recently in Manchester’s newest 5* Hotel, Hotel Gotham.
