Local Stockton-on-Tees contractor Barclay Roofing Ltd chose an IKO pitched roofing solution of IKOslate to replace a 4000m2 roof at Abbey Hill Academy which was badly in need of repair.

Abbey Hill Academy is a special education needs school in Stockton-on-Tees in the North East of England.

The school helps young people aged 11 to 16 who have learning difficulties and disabilities; learn, grow, inspire and achieve.

IKO was approached to carry out a roof condition survey on the Stephenson Building at the school. After careful inspection, it was discovered that the roof was nearing the end of its life expectancy and was failing in many areas.

Barclay Roofing was appointed to carry out the mammoth task but they didn’t shy away from the challenge. Work commenced during the summer of 2017 and was completed a year later, with the most intensive work was carried out during the holidays when the pupils were not at school in order to minimise disruption to their learning.

Barclay Roofing started by removing all the existing cement slates and the felt system which had broken down and was causing condensation issues within the school building. IKO Rubershield Pro Breather Membrane was installed to make the school’s roof watertight again.

The entire roof was then replaced using IKOslate, a polymer composite material made from 99% recycled material (including car parts) with greater robustness and durability than the fibre cement which had previously been used on the school’s roof.

IKOflash, a sustainable alternative to traditional lead, was used for brick abutment to cover flashings and valleys. All structural glazing on the school’s roof was also replaced.

Paul Trelease, Managing Director of Barclay Roofing commented: “We are very happy how this project went. We were very impressed with the products used, which were ideal for the application. The completed roof looks great and is very robust too.”

Phil McHale, Manager of Abbey Hill Academy added: “As a school, we are happy with the finished product. It looks great and the environmental credentials are an added bonus.”

The new roofing system was supplied with a single-point 40-year guarantee so both pupils and staff can now enjoy a learning environment that is safe, warm and dry for years to come.
