ELCO boilers set for new term

As part of the complete refurbishment of the plant room, five THISION L EVO 140kW boilers from ELCO have been installed at Horringer Court School in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

The new boilers have been arranged back to back on the THISION free standing cascade frame – maximising output capacity in a restricted area.

The highly efficient THISION L EVOs have replaced two ageing floor-standing pressure jet units, which had been in operation for over 40 years. The upgrade will provide the school with improved efficiencies and long term reliability, thanks in part to the high quality construction of the ELCO boilers.

The Horringer Court School has recently experienced a significant change in its education system, having adopted the forward thinking ‘All-Through’ approach. This allows the school to focus solely on its core mission of helping every pupil to reach his or her potential by providing a seamless education from the ages of 4-19.

With the boiler upgrade, the school’s forward thinking stance on education will coincide with a new era of heating technology. The installed THISION L EVO units are a completely re-engineered range of commercial boiler, utilising the finest technological features and components, while offering powerful outputs from 60kW to 140kW.

Chris Jennings, Director at Sutton Coldfield-based Hydro Mechanical Services Ltd, specified the ELCO boilers and the back to back cascade frame. Commenting on the project, he said: “The existing boilers were old and becoming problematic for the school so, after careful due diligence of the heating system and the requirements of a new design, we opted for the THISION L EVO boilers as the best replacement.

“Due to the nature of the building, the plant room refurbishment needed completing within the six-week period of the school summer holidays. So, given this restricted schedule, we needed a high-quality solution that could be installed within the fixed timeframe. Having used ELCO boilers previously, we knew they would be a great fit for the project and we could rely on the company for a reliable and quick service.”

The THISION boilers are operating at the school in a fully modulating cascade arrangement to provide excellent flexibility and reliability, with all five units sharing a new flue system to accommodate this configuration. ELCO’s in line and back to back cascade arrangements facilitate quick installation of systems up to 1.1MW — even in limited plant room spaces. The pre-fabricated cascade rigs can also be easily transported on site and set up by just one person.

Chris Jennings from Hydro Mechanical commented: “It’s the first time we’ve used the back to back arrangement, and the engineers on site really liked the flexibility and ease of assembly.”

Brett Stokes, Area Sales Manager for ELCO Heating Solutions, was closely involved with the project. He said: “With the new plant installation serving the entire school building, we were keen to offer a versatile system, so the back to back cascade setup was a great option. The project also coincided with the recent launch of the THISION L EVO boiler, so staff and pupils at the school will benefit from energy efficient heating and hot water production all year round.”

Outstanding features of the THISION L EVO include: a flat metal fibre cold flame burner for extremely low NOx emissions; a robust stainless steel heat exchanger with double wall geometry providing superb heat transfer; extensive cascade arrangements for powerful and flexible systems; plus the latest control functionality to ensure optimum performance.
