The shortlist for the first RIBA Conservation Award has been announced.
The brand-new accolade celebrates historic buildings and places that have been creatively and sensitively restored to conserve them, manage change around them, enhance their sustainability or social accessibility.
Today, over 99% of England's population lives within a mile of a listed building, structure or location. Yet without specialist renovation, restoration and maintenance, the future of such heritage is uncertain.

The shortlisted projects demonstrate how historic structures can be successfully adapted for modern needs, ensuring they benefit the communities they serve, while preserving their rich history.
The four shortlisted projects:
Pembroke, Mill Lane by Haworth Tompkins
The most significant expansion of Pembroke College, Cambridge since the 14th century, transforming a formerly inaccessible site into a cohesive and accessible collegiate campus.
Rochdale Town Hall by Donald Insall Associates
The restoration of one of the UK's most significant 19th-century buildings, restoring its place at the heart of Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
SPID Theatre, Kensal House Community Rooms by Studio Sam Causer
Restoration of a community hub as a cornerstone of the Grade II listed Kensal House estate, bringing the building back into use after years of neglect.
The Buttermarket, by Architectural Thread
An old butter market in Redruth, Cornwall, transformed into a fully accessible, thriving community hub, bringing together food vendors, artists, small businesses and a diverse programme of events.
Liz Smith, Jury Chair and Chairperson at Purcell Architecture, said: "The inaugural Conservation Award recognises exceptional projects that highlight the creativity, skill, and stewardship to protect a heritage building's past, while ensuring its continued relevance and impact for current and future generations.
“This shortlist represents the great breadth and depth of heritage conservation work led by architects, from detailed conservation repair of fine historic interiors to 20th century buildings, alongside thoughtful adaptation of historic buildings and spaces cherishing heritage to create inspiring and joyful new places.
“Each project demonstrates a carefully considered conservation and design philosophy underpinning its success."
Chris Williamson, RIBA President, said: “Historic buildings and places are central to the identity of our towns, cities and communities. Yet many remain neglected and in urgent need of care.
“This inaugural award celebrates the exceptional expertise of RIBA members, whose sensitive and skilled approach to conservation breathes new life into our historic buildings.
“Together, the shortlisted projects set an inspiring benchmark for how thoughtful restoration and adaptation can preserve our architectural legacy, while ensuring historic places continue to enrich communities for generations to come.”
